Is “Basic” Really a Bad Thing?

“Her outfit is so basic.”

“She’s so basic.”

“I could never have a basic outfit.”

What’s so wrong with having a “basic” outfit. I think the general public often thinks of a basic outfit as a bad thing, when in reality the basics really play an important role in making a good outfit. Every girl should have basics in their closet when building her wardrobe.

The Problem With “Statement Pieces”

First off, let’s define “statement pieces". Statement pieces, or staple pieces are essentially items that are unique or that draw the most attention to bring your outfit together. There is no real “problem” with having statement pieces because it can really take your outfit from boring to exciting, but having too much statement pieces and not enough basics can hurt in the long run.

If you want to just throw on something casual chic for an event or to run errands, it can be hard to quickly find an outfit that matches the occasion if every clothing item you own is a statement piece. It can also be hard to make more outfits with them, and statement pieces are usually the most recognizable item on your person, and you don’t want to keep wearing the same thing right?

Why Are Basics Important?

Again, let’s define what “basics” or “essentials” are. Basics are items in your wardrobe that are just plain and simple and BASIC, but not in a bad way. You need these basics to build your outfit. Something as simple as a white cotton top can go a longgg way with creating multiple outfits. For example, if you’re needing to go to run errands but still want to look put together and chic look while keeping it casual, then basics will achieve that for you. Like I just said, a cotton top can go a long way.

It’s easy to pair a white top with a cute cotton jacket and some biker shorts with matching sneakers to make a cute and chic outfit while keeping it casual. If you want to start working on having a better and cleaner style, stocking up on basics should definitely be the first thing you need to work on. Another post will be up on basics to help guide you on what to get :)

Remember that you’re entitled to wear whatever you want, and if someone wants to call you basic then let them! Be confident in your style even if you’re wearing just a plain white tee. <3
